SPIRIT SOUNDINGS

SEPTEMBER 2010

As I look out the window I can see that the first signs of Autumn are beginning to appear.  The sun angle has shifted, giving a deeper hue of blue to the sky and giving a filtered look to the sunshine.  There are a few—just a few—leaves beginning to take on their new fall color and there is a hint of cool in the blowing of the wind.

With the coming of autumn will come a change in our gathering pattern as well.  We will begin worshipping at 8:00 am and 10:30 am beginning September 12th.  Christian Education begins the same day and will be available for everyone.  In response to the Community Forums we held, there will two options for adult education available.  One will be held in the Pastor’s Study, the other will be in the sanctuary.

Many of you have expressed interest in learning the basics: bible basics, Lutheran basics, and catechism.  I am currently looking into finding a good curriculum for bible basics and will make this an offering during the fall.  Others have expressed interest in something that can spark discussion about the faith journey.  For this we will be offering the NOOMA series from Rob Bell.  NOOMA is a series of modern parables presented in short 10-15 minute mini films that cover a wide range of topics.  The short film naturally leads to good discussion that can carry on in the lobby area with a good cup of coffee.

Additionally, as we move into fall together, I am issuing a challenge of sorts, a challenge to look for or be conscious of how God is working in the world.  Take a look around.  Where do you see God?  How do you see God working through people?  How do you experience God working in your life?  What have been your encounters with God?  Why, you may ask, am I making this a challenge?  Simple, I am asking that we all, myself included, to put some flesh to our faith.  We assemble for worship on Sunday mornings, we gather for fellowship and we serve the neighbor in Jesus name.  All these are meant to develop and strengthen us in our lives as followers of Jesus.  So, when you are out there living life, what do you see?  Pay attention, let’s be keenly aware of what God is up to.  Then, please, email me, call me, stop by the office, or let’s meet and tell me what you have seen.

I believe that the stories of God’s action in the world serve to strengthen and edify the whole body of Christ and give life to the Gospel that brings about faith in the lives of others.  So, let’s keep an eye out, and share together what God is up to.

Blessings on the Journey.

Pastor Christian

President’s Corner

One night, a few weeks ago, I was riding my mountain bike up a trail on Green Mountain when I saw what I thought was a dead snake in the trail.  I got off my bike and walked up to him (slowly, I’m not that dumb!) to get him off the trail.  As I got closer, he coiled up his four foot length and rattled at me to show that he was alive and well.  My goal had been to ride past that point in the trail.  His preference was that I not.  I deferred.

In time, I did get past that point and got to the top of the trail about the same time that the electrical storm arrived.  As I listened to the thunder I started happily singing out loud the song I learned in the first grade that explained why lightning results in thunder. That kept me happy (recall my earlier remark about not being dumb?  hmm.) until I came across a hiker on the trail whose hair was standing on end.  Seriously, all his hair was standing straight up and he had no idea!.  I warned him about the electrical storm and rode down the trail as fast as I could.

I don’t know where this is going except that it’s a fun story to tell and also, you can’t ride up a hill without running into an occasional snake or electrical storm; or for that matter any number of obstacles. As we at LCHS weekly try new paths in our spiritual growth, with the potential for any number of obstacles, I’m thankful that I get to travel those paths with all of you.  What a comfortable community we have.

Rev. Robert Menter

Rev. Robert Menter, at one time the pastor of Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, passed away peacefully at 8:15pm pst on Saturday March 6th in Palm Desert California.

He had been battling resurgent cancer in his body for the past nine or so months. he had a small stroke and was taken to a respite care facility in Palm Desert by his hospice care providers. Sadly he did not improve, but continued to decline, slipped into a comatose state, and passed away approximately 24 hours later.

His oldest son Mark was in Palm Desert when he passed away, along with Debbie Garver. Fortunately he was able to visit with all three of his sons and their children, including the youngest ones, Mark's daughter Angelique, and Keith’s son Keagan, both two, a couple weeks ago that included much happiness and laughter.

Robert was cremated, and requested that half of his ashes be buried on Idyllwild mountain at Catherine Garver’s cabin, and the other half be interred in Pemberville Ohio. The first part of his wishes were carried out on Saturday, May 1st following a funeral service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Palm Desert with his pastor Charles Riggs presiding and his long time friend and seminary classmate David Babcock preaching. Service arrangements for Pemberville have yet to be finalized, but will probably take place either before or after the annual Pemberville Parade on August 21, 2010.

2010 Project Glean Details

What?  Project Glean is an annual program whereby COMPA, in partnership with regional farmers and community volunteers, harvests nutritious produce to provide for those in need.

Who?  COMPA currently has partnerships with four Colorado farmers: Domenico Farms of Denver, Grant Family Farms of Wellington, and Petrocco Farms and Sakata Farms of Brighton.

Where?  Project Glean provides COMPA with fields located from north Denver to the Brighton vicinity, and as far north as Wellington, Colorado.  The field location for each event is not known until the week of the event.

When?  Project Glean takes place during the harvest season, in the months of September and October.  Every (non-holiday) Saturday, dependent on weather and harvest conditions, COMPA organizes volunteer groups to glean, typically in the morning and early afternoon hours for 2 to 4 hours.

How?  On the scheduled glean day, volunteers meet at the COMPA warehouse at 7:30 am for orientation and instructions, then follow written directions to the glean site.  COMPA staff direct the gleaning activity, with volunteers harvesting produce from the fields and loading the trucks.  COMPA drivers then return the produce to the warehouse where it is weighed and stored for sorting and distribution, usually beginning the following week.  All ages of volunteers are allowed to participate, with families encouraged to use the opportunity to teach the meaning of service to their children.  Because of the weather and field conditions, volunteers are encouraged to bring water, mosquito repellent, snacks, lunch, sun screen, gloves, long pants, hat, sun glasses, shoes appropriate for fields, and whatever else you feel is needed.   Actual work may involve anything from picking peppers from the plant to cutting cabbage to loading up to 50 pound boxes. Volunteers may work as long as they like. Typically, gleaning wraps up no later than 2:00 pm.

Why?  Over one thousand volunteers participate in Project Glean each year, providing hundreds of thousands of pounds of nutritious produce for COMPA food pantries and neighborhood agencies.  These 150 COMPA agencies then distribute this food to more than 70,000 individuals in need in our communities.

Internships for Unaccompanied Refugee Minors are needed for young people who are under the age of 18 who have been resettled in the United States through Lutheran Family Services of Colorado. At the invitation of our government they come to the US without a parent or relative to care for them and are now living in foster homes.  These youth are anxious to work, to learn skills and to better understand the culture. If you would like more information about providing work experience on a part-time basis for one of these courageous, deserving young people, please contact Cindi Newkirk-Noah, Director of Foster Care at 303-217-5846.

Blessed with a picture-perfect day in the Rocky Mountains, 124 golfers enjoyed a day on the links at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen for the Lutheran Family Services 2010 Annual Golf Classic. Reggie Rivers was the guest emcee and conducted a great live auction, helping to raise over $35,000.

Thank you to the golfers, sponsors and volunteers for a great tournament! Your commitment to helping vulnerable children, families and older adults in our community is sincerely appreciated. Partnerships with people like you allow us to truly make a difference. Through our programs of foster care, adoption, refugee and asylee services, assistance for older adults and their caregivers, pregnancy counseling and disaster response we have seen many lives changed for the better.    Thank you!

DO YOU HAVE HOLY SPIRIT MEMORIES?

As part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations, the Holy Spirit scrapbooks will be updated. If you have any pictures, bulletins, newsletters, fliers, handouts or other such memorabilia that you would like to offer for Inclusion in our Holy Spirit scrapbook, please put the items in the large container marked Scrapbook/Memorabilia located in the Narthex. You will find the container on the table in the corner where the framed Charter Member list and the “heart quilt” are located.

The container will be available as of Sunday, August 29 and will remain in place until October 1, 2010. This should give you ample time to locate and donate your memorabilia.

Please assist with the identification process by including the following: names of persons in the photo, event that is pictured and the date of the event.

If you have any discs with pictures and/or articles, please print the photos and/or items prior to submitting. Doing that part of the process will assist greatly in the gathering of memorabilia from the last 11 years.

At the present time the scrapbooks from the 1960’s-1999 are being updated and they will be available as the process is completed.

Again:
The Scrapbook/Memorabilia container will be available as of Sunday, August 29 and will remain in place until October 1, 2010.
